Food waste is a serious problem across the globe. Did you know that about 30% of food is wasted at some point in the supply chain from source to consumer? That translates to a billion tonnes or a trillion dollars worth annually.
Food waste shouldn’t just be devastating for those who are in living in poverty or have limited access to food. Food waste also harms the world, as it impacts freshwater supplies and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste reductions could help minimize global warming and climate change. Food waste is something that everyone, from every walk of life, should consider prior to purchasing food.
This minute-long video from Unilever provides some insights into how they are contributing to limiting food waste within their operations:
I believe Unilever recognizing and working towards limiting its food waste is an important first step. Zero food waste isn't something that just consumers need to be considerate of, it starts at the beginning of the supply chain implementing changes to their operations.
Upcycling isn't just a 2022 trend. It's a movement towards a more sustainable future. Be the change you want to see!
